From butternut to delicata, these sweet and earthy squashes are a natural pairing with crab cakes. Roasted squashes are my favorite. With just a simple splash of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper, you’ll have a fabulous side dish that’ll work well with pan-fried or baked crab cakes. 

 

Mashed or Roasted Sweet Potatoes 

The natural sweetness of sweet potatoes will pair well with the sweet-buttery crab meat. We recommend going for a more savory preparation with your sweet potatoes. A simple roast with EVOO, salt and pepper or a more robust seasoning of roasted garlic, are both excellent options. 

Brussel Sprouts 

Sautéed or roasted, super-savory or with a touch of honey, a side dish of brussel sprouts work very well with crab cakes. An all-time favorite would be roasted brussel sprouts, where they get a little crispy around the edges, finished with a little splash of balsamic vinegar. That tart and hearty combo balances the rich and buttery crab cakes. 

 

Sautéed Kale or Chard 

These hearty greens, with that light bite of bitterness, are an ideal side dish to pair with crab cakes. We love kale or chard sautéed with oodles of garlic and a squeeze of citrus, adding a tender-crisp texture and a big nutrient boost to any crab cake dinner. 

Beets & Carrots 

Get spicy with your beets and carrots! These sweet and earthy veggies can handle it (as well as the crab cakes). Seasonings, like cumin, chili powder, chili flakes, za’atar, cracked black pepper, ginger, and curry powder are all excellent options for your beets and carrots. The added spice and heat will be cooled by the rich and meaty crab cakes.
